Just as a solid rock is not shaken by the storm, even so the wise are not affected by praise or blame

The Buddha

These words of wisdom from Buddha are really powerful. Of course, we all love to hear complimentary words. This is a human reaction nature. Therefore, when we hear critics, we might feel upset, angry or sad. We feel happy when we get good comments. Therefore, if we live our life depending on others’ approval, we can never get peace. We need to be independent and firm. We should not rely our happiness on others’ mouth.

In his quote above, he simply wanted us to train our mind to be like a solid rock. To do that, you need to know who you are. Therefore, when someone raises or criticizes you, you will not get flattered or hurt. This means you will not be affected by anything or anyone without your consent.

For example, when someone says you are beautiful today, what you can respond to them could be smiling and saying thank you to them. When someone criticizes you by saying you’re impolite, for instance, what you can respond to them could be saying sorry that what you do or say makes them feel that way, and then ask what made them feel that way or simply leave the conversation.

  • Anger is like fire. Holding on to anger is like holding fire.
  • Know who you are. You are not good or bad based on others’ mouth.
